Property Tax by Town

Per $100 of assessed value, for July 2026 bills. Source: Maryland SDAT 2026 to 2027 tax table and the Maryland Department of Legislative Services Fiscal 2027 table.

Where the home is County Town State Total
Outside the towns (most of the county) $0.9779 none $0.112 $1.0899
Bel Air $0.8413 $0.5400 $0.112 $1.4933
Aberdeen $0.8413 $0.5400 $0.112 $1.4933
Havre de Grace $0.8413 $0.5650 $0.112 $1.5183

Aberdeen's town rate dropped from $0.6150 in Fiscal 2026 to $0.5400 for July 2026 bills, per the two DLS tables.

Dollar examples on a $400,000 assessed value, before any credits:

  • Outside the towns, like Edgewood or Fallston: about $4,360 a year
  • Inside Bel Air or Aberdeen: about $5,973 a year
  • Inside Havre de Grace: about $6,073 a year

Town residents pay more in tax but get town services. Your assessed value is set by SDAT and may not match your price. Maryland's Homestead Tax Credit can cap how fast your taxable assessment rises. Harford's cap is 5% a year outside the towns, per the SDAT table.

Income Tax

Harford County's local income tax is 3.06% of Maryland taxable income for 2026, per the Comptroller of Maryland. Baltimore City and Baltimore County are 3.20%. You also pay Maryland state income tax.

Is Bel Air Expensive?

Bel Air town homes pay the town rate shown above, so the tax bill is higher than the same home outside town limits. A Bel Air mailing address doesn't always mean you're inside the town. Check the exact address on SDAT's real property search.

My Advice

Budget the tax bill on the exact address, not the ZIP code. Then add child care if you need it. In MIT's numbers, child care costs more than housing for a family with two kids. Those two lines decide most budgets I see.
