Moving to Harford County, MD (2026 Guide)
The short answer: Harford County sits between Baltimore and the Pennsylvania line, on I-95 and the MARC Penn Line. It has about 266,000 people (Census, July 2025 estimate), a lower county property tax rate than Baltimore City or Baltimore County (Maryland SDAT, July 2026), and one public school system with 55 schools. Many of my clients move here from out of the area. They tend to ask the same five things. What does it cost? How long is the drive to work? Where do my kids go to school? Which town fits me? How do I buy from far away?
This page answers each one with real numbers. Every number has a source and a date. Where I share my own take, it sits under "My advice."

What It Costs to Live Here
MIT's Living Wage Calculator (updated February 15, 2026) says one adult with no kids needs $24.38 an hour in Harford County to cover basic needs. Two working adults with two kids need $30.31 an hour each.
Taxes are the cost most movers miss. Maryland property tax has three layers: state, county and, in three towns, a town rate. I break it all down, with dollar examples, in my Harford County cost of living guide.
Getting to Work
Harford has two MARC Penn Line stations, in Aberdeen and Edgewood. On the MTA timetable in effect through November 15, 2026, the 4:33 AM train from Aberdeen reaches Baltimore Penn Station at 5:10 AM and Washington Union Station at 6:10 AM. The MTA also runs three commuter bus routes from Harford to downtown Baltimore: the 410, 411 and 420.
See every route, stop and published time on my Harford County commute times page.
Schools
Harford County Public Schools (HCPS) runs every public school in the county. That's 55 schools and about 37,000 to 38,000 students, according to the Maryland Manual and HCPS enrollment reports. Your address sets your school. HCPS has a school locator, and the Maryland State Department of Education posts a report card for every school.
Read my Harford County schools overview for how to look up your school and read the official data.
Pick Your Town
Harford has three incorporated towns with their own town government: Aberdeen, Bel Air and Havre de Grace. Everywhere else, like Abingdon, Fallston, Forest Hill, Edgewood, Joppa and Jarrettsville, is run by the county.
That matters for your tax bill and your services. My best places to live in Harford County guide compares towns by commute, transit and tax, not by opinion.

How I Help You Buy From Far Away
Here's how it works. We talk by phone first. I find out your budget, your job location and your timeline. Then I walk you through how buying works in Maryland, step by step. In Maryland, a title company handles the closing.
Already own a home here and moving within the county? Ask for a free home value. You get an automated value by email right away, then I call you to set up an appointment. You can also see how I sell homes, what it costs to sell and answers to common seller questions.
My Advice
Start with your commute, not the house. Drive it or ride it at rush hour before you sign anything. Then check your exact address with HCPS and with Maryland SDAT so you know your school and your tax rate. Those two lookups save more regret than anything else I tell people.
