The Havre de Grace Promenade is a 3/4-mile boardwalk with views of the Susquehanna River, right next to Concord Point Lighthouse, built in 1827. The lighthouse is free to tour on weekends from April through October, weather permitting.

The lighthouse is closed November through March, except for special events. So if you go this winter, plan on the walk and the views. Save the climb for spring.

What is the Havre de Grace Promenade?

The Promenade is a boardwalk with a view of the Susquehanna River. It sits next to Tydings Park, the Decoy Museum, the Maritime Museum and Concord Point Lighthouse. The city's tourism site says visitors come to watch waterfowl and read signs about the Chesapeake Bay.

Here's my favorite part. You can link a museum, a lighthouse and a waterfront walk in one easy outing.

What is Concord Point Lighthouse?

Concord Point Lighthouse is a 30-foot granite tower in Concord Point Park, which overlooks the spot where the Susquehanna River meets the Chesapeake Bay. The group that runs it, the Friends of Concord Point Lighthouse, shares these facts:

  • Built in 1827 by John Donahoo
  • Made of local Port Deposit granite, with walls 3 feet thick at the base
  • The first keeper was John O'Neill, a hero of the War of 1812
  • The light was automated in 1920 and taken out of service in 1975
  • The keeper's house was built in 1827 too, about 200 feet from the tower

The Friends group says it's the oldest lighthouse in Maryland that's open to the public, and the northernmost lighthouse on the Chesapeake Bay. The group also calls it the second oldest lighthouse in Maryland. It turns 200 in 2027.

Can you climb Concord Point Lighthouse?

Yes, and it's free during the season. Inside you climb 27 granite steps and then an 8-rung iron ladder to the lantern. You must be at least 42 inches tall to climb to the top.

What are the lighthouse hours?

The lighthouse and the Keeper's House Museum are open April through October:

Day Hours
Saturday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Sunday 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

They are closed November through March, except for special events. Weather can close them too. Call (410) 939-3213 with questions. Confirm before you go.

Where do you park?

The lighthouse address is 714 Concord St., Havre de Grace, MD 21078. The lighthouse site does not list parking details, so check the city's tourism site for parking options before you go.

What's near the Promenade?

  • Havre de Grace Decoy Museum: right by the Promenade
  • Havre de Grace Maritime Museum: also on the waterfront
  • Tydings Park: picnic areas, a playground and the entrance to the Promenade
