1. Fun City Adventure Park (Edgewood)

Where: 1401 N Pulaski Highway, Edgewood, MD 21040 | Phone: (443) 402-1687 | Site: funcityedgewood.com

Fun City is a big indoor play park right on Route 40. If your kids are bouncing off the walls at home, let them bounce off these walls instead.

What's inside

  • Wall-to-wall trampoline courts
  • Ninja course and a high ropes course
  • Rock climbing walls and a foam pit
  • Trampoline dodgeball and basketball
  • A playground for little ones
  • An indoor soccer court
  • Arcade games

What it costs

  • General: $25 for 1.5 hours, $28 for 2 hours, $30 for 3 hours
  • Kids 42 inches and under: $20 for 1.5 hours, $25 for 2 hours, $28 for 3 hours
  • Jump socks: $4

Fun City's contact page sends you to Google for its latest hours, so check there before you go. Everyone needs a signed waiver, so fill it out on their site before you go.

2. Ice World (Abingdon)

Where: 1300 Governor Court, Abingdon, MD 21009 | Phone: 410-612-1000 | Site: iceworld.com

Ice World has two NHL-size rinks under one roof, and it's open all year. Public skating is the easy win for a cold Saturday.

What it costs

  • Admission: $14
  • Friday and Saturday evening sessions: $15. These have the "Light the Ice" light show. Glider bars aren't allowed at these.
  • Skate rental: $5

Ice World says to register online, because you can save money that way. The schedule changes, so check the public skate calendar on their site first.

Tips from Ice World

  • Dress warm: long pants, long sleeves, gloves and long socks.
  • They also suggest a bike helmet.
  • Homeschool families get $10 admission and skate rental during the noon to 2 PM session on set Thursdays (Nov. 5, 12 and 19 and Dec. 3, 10 and 17). Tell the cashier you homeschool.

The Friday or Saturday night light show is a fun, cheap date night. Grab dinner nearby and you're set.

3. Anita C. Leight Estuary Center (Abingdon)

Where: 700 Otter Point Road, Abingdon, MD 21009 | Phone: 410-612-1688 | Site: otterpointcreek.org

This is one of my favorite rainy-day trips for little kids in this part of the county. The center sits on Otter Point Creek, and it's part of the Chesapeake Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve.

What you'll find

  • Hands-on exhibits about the Chesapeake Bay and local wildlife
  • A Discovery Room with a 300-gallon freshwater turtle pond
  • About 2 miles of hiking trails, open dawn to dusk
  • A Nature Discovery Area for kids, with a music station, a play kitchen and even a sunken canoe

Hours

  • Monday to Friday: 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM
  • Saturday: 9 AM to 4:30 PM
  • Sunday: noon to 4:30 PM, but closed Sundays from December to March

Dogs must stay on a leash on the trails. They also run programs like live reptile meet-and-greets. Check their event calendar for dates and fees.

4. Tracers Golf at Mountain Branch (Joppa)

Where: 1811 Mountain Road, Joppa, MD 21085 | Phone: 410-836-9600, ext. 3022 | Site: tracersgolf.com

You don't have to be good at golf to have fun here. Tracers has dozens of individual hitting bays. You pick a game, and the system scores where your ball lands.

Why it's a good night out

  • The bays and targets are lit, so you can play at night.
  • Kids and adults can play together. Anyone under 16 needs an adult.
  • It works for birthdays, team outings and date nights.
  • It sits next to the Mountain Branch golf course.

No outside food or drinks are allowed. Their site doesn't list hours or bay prices, so call 410-836-9600, ext. 3022, before you go.

Which Spot Should You Pick?

  • Toddlers and preschoolers: the Estuary Center, or the small-kid play area at Fun City.
  • Kids 6 and up: Fun City or public skating at Ice World.
  • Date night: Tracers Golf or a light-show skate at Ice World.
